Gesteund door de professoren van de faculteiten voor geneeskunde van de Gentse en Leuvense universiteiten en door leden van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Geneeskunde kende het '(Belgisch)Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde' zijn eerste uitgave in september 1945. Doorheen de jaren is het tijdschrift door de toetreding van professoren van de Antwerpse, Brusselse en Hasseltse universiteiten en van praktiserende artsen uit de algemene en klinische geneeskunde, uitgegroeid tot een overkoepelend orgaan met een vaste waarde voor medische voorlichting en bijvorming van de artsen in Vlaanderen.
